The Anglo-Saxons were a tribe made up of Angles, Saxons and Jutes of Germanic societies living in Holland, Belgium and Denmark. The first Anglo-Saxons invaded and colonized Britain in the fifth and sixth centuries, this period is traditionally known as the Dark Ages.  Culture Religion: the Anglo-Saxon religion was pagan, but Christianity spread across England and remplaced their pagan religion. Language: Old English as the language spoken until the norman conquest of AD 1066, when it gradually changed into the Middle English. Literature: Anglo-Saxon literature included epic poetry, sermons, Bible translatios, legal works, chronicles and riddles. This invasion began with the idea that the Romans wanted to conquer the whole European continent, one of the most important was the Great Britain. Before the Roman Ivasion, Britain was ruled by tribes called the Celts. It was in AD 43  when Romans invaded Britain by the new Emperor, Claudius. For around a century, the Roman army had been building an Empire across Europe.It was Britain's turn. The Emperor was really worried about what his subjects would think of him,he thought they would think he was weak because of his age,and invading Britain could be his opportunity to show them he was a great leader. There were many other reasons to invade Britain,however,that was the main one. The Romans wanted Britain's precious metals. They called the land ‘Britannia’, which meant 'land of tin'. The ancient Celts were various population groups living in several parts of Europe north of the Mediterranean region from the Late Bronze Age onwards. Given the name Celts by ancient writters, these tribes often migrated and so eventually occupied territories from Portugal to Turkey.
